A new tramway connection in Tallinn

The 1,067 mm gauge tramway network in the Estonian capital city Tallinn has been extended on 1 December 2024: Line 2 connects the existing terminal stops Kopli and Suur-Paala using a new 2.5 km long, continuous double-track route close to the city centre through the port area with a connection to the ferry terminal between the stops Paberi and Suur Rannavärav (formerly Linnahall). Once the construction of the Rail Baltica Ülemiste terminal progresses to a stage that permits trams to pass through the future terminal area, the tram will begin operating to the airport instead of the Suur-Paala terminus which is served by tram line 4, too.

The new PESA trams which are in passenger service since the end of August 2024 are used on this new line, together with older rolling stock.

Construction cost of the ‘Old City Harbour tram line’ amounted to approximately 55 million euros (incl. VAT). The project received 36.5 million euros in funding from the European Union’s NextGenerationEU recovery fund.

In the meantime, the remaining trolleybus operation in Tallinn was temporarily discontinued as planned on 31 October 2024 in order to initiate extensive modernisation. New vehicles are expected to be ordered shortly.
