Following the completion of the approval process, the Technical Supervisory Authority (TAB) of Stadtwerke Augsburg (swa) has granted operational approval for the new Tramlink generation from Stadler Rail, thereby clearing the way for its use in regular passenger service. More than two and a half years have passed since the delivery of the first vehicle – we reported HERE.

The approval covers both the vehicle’s technical systems and its integration into the existing infrastructure of Augsburg’s tram network. With operations commencing on 13 April 2026, the vehicles will initially be introduced in stages, alongside extensive training measures for drivers. This training particularly includes handling new driver assistance systems as well as adapting to altered vehicle characteristics.

Vehicle concept and technical features

The Tramlink vehicles are designed as fully low-floor articulated multi-section units, measuring around 42 metres in length and weighing approximately 52 tonnes when empty. Their maximum passenger capacity is up to 230 passengers. Two generously sized multi-purpose areas enable barrier-free transport of wheelchairs, walking aids and prams.

The propulsion concept is based on energy-efficient electric traction, supplemented by modern auxiliary systems. These include a CO₂-controlled air-conditioning system, which allows demand-based regulation of air quality and temperature within the passenger compartment. The driver’s cab is equipped with camera-based rear-view systems, improving visibility while also offering aerodynamic advantages.

Operational integration and fleet strategy

The introduction of the new vehicles takes place in the context of network and capacity expansions, particularly with regard to the extension of Line 3 and the planned operation through the station tunnel from 2027 onwards. At the same time, the Tramlink vehicles are replacing the approximately 30-year-old GT6 trams, which have been withdrawn from service due to their lower capacity and outdated technology. They were sold to Zagreb.

In total, Augsburg has ordered 15 vehicles of this type. At the time of approval, several units are already at the depot, with further vehicles being delivered progressively. By the end of 2026, up to nine Tramlink units are expected to be in regular passenger service.
