Berlin: Planning for the extension of the U8 gains speed

When it was completed in 1974, the Märkisches Viertel was the first large new housing estate in the former West Berlin. Today it has around 50,000 inhabitants, but still no direct underground connection. The nearest line, the U8, starts at Hermannstraße (Neukölln) and ends after 22 stops at Wittenau station. From there, you can continue by bus to the Märkisches Viertel via Wilhelmsruher Damm.

The tender for the general planning services for the extension of the U8 to the Märkisches Viertel has now been published. In spring 2024, a financing agreement was reached with the Berlin Senate for the first planning steps for the extension of the U8 line.

Planning can now begin soon. The basic assessment is to take place from January 2025. Based on the local framework conditions, a rough cost framework estimate and schedule will be drawn up and the technical starting point for further planning will be laid.
