Berlin double deck bus on test in Hamburg

Hamburg’s transport authority vhh.mobility has recently completed a public service trial of a double-decker bus supplied by Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG). The vehicle, an Alexander Dennis Enviro500, was tested on express route X80 between Hamburg’s Central Bus Station (ZOB) and Bergedorf from mid-October to 12 November, covering a corridor representative of high-capacity, motorway-based operations within the Hamburg Transport Association (hvv).

The initiative, conducted in cooperation with the City of Hamburg, aimed to evaluate the suitability of the Enviro500 for local operating conditions and passenger demand patterns. The vehicle offers 112 passenger spaces, including 80 seated, distributed over two decks. Its upper level provides a panoramic view and enhanced passenger comfort, while the lower level is designed with large standing space and dedicated areas for wheelchairs and prams, meeting the accessibility standards required in Hamburg’s fleet.

During the trial, the vehicle demonstrated a high level of ride comfort and stability, even on elevated-speed sections of the route. The double-deck layout proved particularly advantageous for express and regional-style services, where high seating capacity and motorway compatibility are essential, and standing passengers are not permitted.

The bus – finished in BVG’s signature yellow with the slogan “Weil wir dich lieben” (“Because we love you”) – attracted significant public attention. Passengers were invited to provide feedback via QR codes displayed onboard or online, helping vhh.mobility assess public perception and operational feasibility.

From a technical standpoint, the Enviro500 represents the latest generation of tri-axle double-deckers, featuring a lightweight structure and efficient driveline optimised for urban and interurban use. A battery-electric variant of a double-dcker model could align with Hamburg’s long-term objective of achieving a zero-emission bus fleet by the end of the decade.

If adopted, the double-decker might return to Hamburg for regular services for the first time in decades, offering a combination of capacity and comfort well suited for the city’s growing network of express bus routes.
