After the long months of the Corona crisis, life in Bremen’s city center is set to return, stores and restaurants are allowed to reopen in compliance with hygiene requirements. As part of the “Action Program Downtown”, the city’s public transport operator BSAG Bremer Straßenbahn AG also wants to do its part: Starting today on June 5, 2021, a new tramway line 11 operates every Saturday from the main train station Hauptbahnhof on a circular route through the city center and back. It is free of charge for passengers.
The streetcars run between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. at prime shopping hours. “With the new 11 we are giving the city center a strong boost,” says Bremen’s transport senator Dr. Maike Schaefer, explaining, “the line is part of our action program to bring purchasing power back into the city. The line makes shopping in the city even more convenient. Those who come to Bremen by car or public transport only need to change trains and travel practically right up to the store windows of the stores.” “It could hardly be more practical,” says Jens Ristedt, chairman of the Bremen CityInitiative.
For BSAG, the new one is also of great importance. “After the long months of necessary restrictions, we now want to win back the passengers who took a public transport break during the Corona period. Those who experience again how practical and stress-free local public transport in Bremen is and how much effort we put into the daily implementation of hygiene measures will also give us their trust again in the long term,” says BSAG CEO Hajo Müller.
