Since spring 2026, Kitzbühel’s urban transport network has been operated entirely with electric buses. Three new MAN electric buses, each around ten metres long, are available to ÖBB Postbus for operation on the two urban bus routes 1 and 2. The vehicles connect the railway station and town centre with residential areas and key destinations such as Bichlalm, Sonngrub and the health centre.
Three vehicles were deliberately provided for the operation. Two buses are normally in service, while the third is available as a reserve vehicle or during charging, maintenance or unexpected breakdowns. The vehicles are charged using dedicated charging infrastructure at the Postbus depot in Kitzbühel, with charging generally taking place overnight.
The introduction of electric buses was accompanied by an adjustment of the public transport service. Both routes now operate from approximately 07:00 to 19:00 or 20:00 from Monday to Saturday, and from 08:00 to 18:00 on Sundays and public holidays. In the town centre, the coordinated route structure provides a 30-minute service interval. The three electric buses cover a combined total of around 110,000 kilometres per year.
The project was supported through Austria’s EBIN – Emissions-Free Buses and Infrastructure funding programme. Under the EU-funded EBIN programme, the Austrian Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure supports the transition to zero-emission bus propulsion by covering 60 per cent of the additional cost of the buses and 40 per cent of the cost of the associated infrastructure.
