First CAF Urbos tram presented for Marseille

The first CAF Urbos tram for Marseille was unveiled this week I © RTM

On Tuesday 8 July, the first tram of the new vehicle generation was delivered to RTM (Régie des Transports Métropolitains) in Marseille and presented to the local press shortly afterwards. While the exterior appearance differs only slightly from the Bombardier Outlook/ Flexity vehicles currently in service, the interior offers significant improvements in terms of comfort and equipment for passengers.

CAF supplies modern vehicles for the T3 line

The new Urbos trams have seven sections, are 42.5 metres long, 2.65 metres wide and offer space for up to 262 passengers, 62 of whom are seated. Like all other Urbos low-floor trams, the car bodies are made of aluminium.

The vehicles have a low-floor ratio of 100% and are therefore completely barrier-free with two spaces for people with reduced mobility, a pushchair space and around 20 USB ports per vehicle – modern equipment for the use of mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets or laptops.

The exterior design is based on the predecessor vehicles, but has been updated – note the side wall with kink and the protruding chassis I © Ville de Marseille

The new fleet will be manufactured by CAF France, the French subsidiary of Spanish rail vehicle manufacturer CAF. Production takes place at the Bagnères-de-Bigorre site in the Hautes-Pyrénées, where around 250 people are employed. CAF currently delivers four vehicles per month to RTM.

We reported on the order in 2022 and the expansion programme:

Start of service planned from November

The first new vehicle is scheduled to go into operation in November 2025 on line T3 and its extension between Capitaine Gèze and La Gaye. A total of 15 new trams are to be successively integrated into the existing network by the beginning of next year.
