Deutsche Bahn is getting new leadership – current CEO, Dr Richard Lutz, is stepping down. However, Lutz will remain in office until a successor is found. This was announced by Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder at a press conference this afternoon.

Lutz has been a member of the Deutsche Bahn Executive Board since 2010 and has served as its Chairman since 2017. His current contract would not have expired until 2027, but rumours about his imminent replacement have been circulating for some time. Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder announced in Berlin after talks with Supervisory Board Chairman Werner Gatzer and Deutsche Bahn CEO Dr Richard Lutz that it was time for a structural and personnel reorganisation. In this context, it was mutually agreed to terminate Lutz’s contract prematurely.

Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder: ‘I would like to thank Dr. Lutz for his great commitment to Deutsche Bahn during difficult times. I am sure that he will continue to give his all for the railways in the remaining weeks.’

Supervisory Board Chairman Werner Gatzer: “Dr. Richard Lutz has led Deutsche Bahn for many years and given it a great deal of impetus. He deserves our sincere thanks for this. We will now start a selection process for a new CEO and then prepare the relevant resolutions for the Supervisory Board.”
