Greater Paris: First Urban Ropeway Câble C1 opened

On 13 December 2025, the urban cable car Câble C1 welcomed its first passengers. The approximately 4.5-kilometre-long line extends Metro Line 8 and significantly improves connectivity between the southern suburbs of Paris and the Île-de-France transport network. The project provides the region with a sustainable transport solution that fully meets the requirements of modern urban mobility and the standards set by the regional transport authority, Île-de-France Mobilités (IDFM).

As the first urban cable car system in the Île-de-France region, Câble C1 is regarded as a flagship project for future mobility solutions in densely populated metropolitan areas, both in Europe and worldwide. The project demonstrates how cable cars can function as an integral part of public transport networks, opening up a new level of mobility and helping to relieve traffic congestion. With five stations along a route of around 4.5 kilometres, the cable car significantly enhances mobility for the municipalities of Créteil, Valenton, Limeil-Brévannes and Villeneuve-Saint-Georges.

Câble C1 forms part of Île-de-France Mobilités’ strategy to expand public transport across the Greater Paris area and promote innovative mobility solutions. The cable car system was chosen for its minimal ground footprint, short construction period and ease of integration into existing infrastructure. At all stations, passengers can conveniently transfer to other modes of transport such as buses and the Metro. The cable car therefore provides an intermodal, fast, fully accessible and carbon-free connection across heavily trafficked roads and railway lines. In future, it is expected to carry up to 11,000 passengers per day. The journey time along the entire route is just 18 minutes — around half as long as before.

Well-known Austrian manufacturer Doppelmayr has built the system and supplied a total of 105 OMEGA V-XL cabins, each offering seating for up to ten passengers. Particular emphasis has been placed on accessibility: the cabins are level-access and comfortably accommodate wheelchair users, passengers with reduced mobility, bicycles and pushchairs. Additional features include real-time visual and audio passenger information, video surveillance, ample handrails and an intercom system for communication with operating staff. The stations themselves also meet all public transport accessibility requirements and provide unrestricted step-free access for all passengers.
