Construction of Wiener Linien’s new tram line 12 began on 4 July 2024. From autumn 2025, the link between the U6 Josefstädter Straße via the U4 Friedensbrücke and the Traisengasse S-Bahn station to Hillerstrasse in the second district will go into operation. Line 12 will run between Leopoldstadt and Brigittenau and connect four Viennese districts (8th, 9th, 20th, 2nd) with a total population of around 250,000. Passengers can transfer from the new tram to four underground lines: U1, U4, U6 and in future also to the new U5 at Arne-Karlsson-Park. From probably autumn 2025, the 12 line will run from the U6 station Josefstädter Straße via Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof to the U4 Friedensbrücke, U6 Jägerstraße and Dresdner Straße, on to the S-Bahn station Traisengasse, via the Nordbahnviertel to the U1 Vorgartenstraße and on to Hillerstrasse.
The 12 line opens up Nordbahnhof and the new Nordwestbahnhof district in future
Many of the flats around the Nordbahnhof site are located in the vicinity of Vorgartenstraße. In future, these will be even better connected to Vienna’s public transport network thanks to two new tram stops. The same applies to the Nordwestbahnhof urban development area: a new neighbourhood for 16,000 people will be built here on 44 hectares by 2035. With the expansion of the urban development area, there are plans to run line 12 through the new neighbourhood. Line 12 will also mean shorter journey times: For example, the journey from Bruno-Marek-Allee/Taborstraße to Dresdner Straße (U6) will be reduced from 14-18 to 9 minutes. In future, passengers will be able to travel from the Nordbahnviertel to the Donauzentrum in 11 minutes instead of the previous 18 minutes.
Five new stops on 2.2 km of new line
In future, the new tram line 12 will run from U6 Josefstädter Straße via the existing route of lines 33 and 2 to Taborstraße and from there via a new 2.2 kilometre route to the terminus at Hillerstrasse in the Stuwerviertel district. In the section from Haussteinstraße to Walcherstraße, line 12 will run on grass track for around 230 metres. Five of the 24 stops on the 12 will be newly built. Track and road construction work in the Taborstraße area will kick off the construction work. Completion is planned for autumn 2025.
