The 200th modernised local public transport vehicle in Germany left the IFTEC specialist workshop in Leipzig on 15 March 2023. Since 2005, the Leipzig-based company IFTEC, a joint venture of Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe and Siemens Mobility GmbH, has been modernising trams and metros from all over Germany, including for Nuremberg, Munich and the Berlin public transport authority. The Nuremberg order includes 40 vehicles of the GT6N and GT8N series.

“With our experience in the modernisation and maintenance of vehicles for Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe, we are offering our services to customers throughout Germany and thus further expanding our expertise. The 200th vehicle is a great milestone that was only made possible as a team effort,” says Gert Maßors, Head of Work Preparation Modernisation Rail Vehicles at IFTEC GmbH und Co. KG.

In June 2016, IFTEC, together with the consortium leader Kiepe Electric (formerly Vossloh Kiepe) from Düsseldorf, had received the order for the refurbishment of the trams from Nuremberg. The first series for 14 vehicles of the type GT6N was completed in mid-2020, and the modernisation series of 26 vehicles of the type GT8N started in parallel already in 2018. Extensive conversion measures had to be carried out at the Bautzner Straße site for this longer vehicle type. The 200th public transport vehicle to be comprehensively modernised by IFTEC is the Nuremberg tram 1125.

IFTEC employs around 530 people and had an annual turnover of approximately 78 million euros in the 2022 financial year. The company primarily uses local know-how for the modernisation of trams and underground trains. For a wide variety of projects, for example, bellows come from Schkeuditz, interior lighting and ceiling systems from Leipzig and gearboxes are reworked in Penig.

In addition to the modernisation of vehicles, IFTEC also builds switches and track systems for tram systems of German transport companies. Since the company was founded in 2005, it has built 690 track structures for the public transport sector.

“With the know-how of our colleagues, we support the infrastructure expansion and thus the design of the transport turnaround in Germany. With modern equipment, such as a new portal milling machine, we are further expanding our range of services to support our customers in the local public transport sector with technical solutions,” says Peter Tesch, Managing Director of IFTEC GmbH und Co. KG.

The Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe have been repairing their vehicles in their own workshop since 1896. From 1999 to 2001, the workshop division for track maintenance was spun off and in 2001 Siemens AG joined the company. Since 2005, the company has been known on the maintenance market under the name IFTEC.
