The greater Copenhagen light rail Hovedstadens Letbane was completed on its full length for the first line with 29 stops and 28 km long: The second part consisting of 17 stops and 14.85 km of new line from Rødovre Nord to Lundtofte finally opened on 22 August 2026, 10 months after the first section between Ishøj and Rødovre Nord had been inaugurated in October 2025. At a total of six locations, passengers can now interchange with the suburban train network S-Tog for services to the city centre and the outer surrounding area. No direct interchange has been provided with the diesel-operated Nærumbanen regional railway line, which is due to be modernised in the future.
The opening day
As the first day of the operation of the full length was kept for free for all passengers, naturally the tram vehicles were running very congested on the second part of the line today, at least between 11.00 and 16.00 h. It was a massive event of joy for everyone involved when the Copenhageners were rushing to test the new trams connection. On the stops along the new section there was free Letbanen merchandise for everyone to take away as well as clowns and staff who were there to help out and answer any questions the public might have. There were also musical festivities on many of the stops, especially at Lundtofte, Akademivej, Gladsaxe Trafikplads, Gladsaxe Rådhus, Lyngby Centrum with a variety of cultural and food stands.
Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU) had a clear role in the festivities as well as they benefit hugely from this section of the light rail line.
Service offering
Service frequency currently is every 5-8 minutes and will be increased to every 5 minutes on weekdays and Saturdays during the day and every 10 minutes in the evenings and on Sundays. Approximately 14 million passengers p.a. are expected to use the new line in 2030.
Siemens Avenio
Service is provided by 27 Siemens Mobility Avenio 100% low-floor tramcars. These bi-directional units are approximately 37 metres long, 2.65 metres wide and offer capacity for some 260 passengers, thereof 64 seated.
With the opening of the second section, the first line of Hovedstadens Letbane is now fully operational. It connects the area around Ishøj, south-west of Copenhagen, with Lundtofte to the north, creating a new tangential public transport link outside the city centre.
