Lisbon’s new tramway

© Samuel Costa

Two years ago, CARRIS – the public transport authority of the Portuguese capital Lisbon -ordered a series of 15 low-floor tramcars for its small network in 900 mm narrow gauge. The first two trams are now nearing completion at the manufacturer.

They are five-unit, 100% low-floor vehicles, uni-directional, 28.5 metres long and with a total of four entrances, two each in modules 2 and 4. Up to 203 passengers can be carried in each train.

The new cars will be used to reinforce traffic on the heavily used shore line 15, on which the existing 10 Siemens/CAF articulated, partially low-floor trams from the 1990s currently operate together with a number of older, short two-axle trams of Lisbon’s traditional tram design of the last decades. This set-up leads to frequent overcrowding not only during the rush hours of the day – the new trams will help to releave here. In addition, line 15 will be extended at both ends, from Alges further to Cruz Quebrada in the west and in the east to the Santa Apolonia mainline station. Further line extensions are planned. This should increase the importance of the tramway once again – beyond the strongly tourist-oriented demand on the remaining hilly lines. The depot and workshop facilities in Santo Amaro along line 15 will also be modernised and adapted to modern needs.

We present here the first two new CAF Urbos trams for Lisbon nearing completion. Delivery is expected soon.
