Luxembourg’s Tram reaches the airport

Luxembourg’s modern low-floor tram has reached an important milestone: since 2 March 2025, the trams travel a further 3.9 km from the previous LuxExpo terminus onwards to Findel/Luxembourg Airport. There is only one intermediate stop at the Héienhaff P+R station, so that the tramways run fast on its own right-of-way alignment. The line runs partly along the A1 motorway, which is also crossed on a 110-metre viaduct.

Line T1 – now 16.2 km long in total – was opened in sections in 2017 and now serves 24 stops between the two termini at the stadium and the airport. 32 seven-section CAF low-floor URBOS trams are used here. A tram arrives every 8 minutes at the airport during most of the day, while the central section Luxexpo – Licée Bouneweg is served every 4 minutes.

The opening ceremony on 2 March was attended by Yuriko Backes, Minister for Mobility and Public Works, Lydie Polfer, Mayor of the City of Luxembourg, Patrick Goldschmidt, Alderman for Mobility, representatives of the municipality of Niederanven and Helge Dorstewitz, Managing Director of Luxtram, as well as numerous interested parties and other invitees.

The further expansion plans for the tram include four additional lines and an interurban high-speed line to Esch/Alzette. They are all to be built in stages over the coming years so that is expected that 300,000 passengers will be using the trams every weekday by 2035. The current number is 100,000 per day – already a very respectable figure, especially for a city with a population of just under 130,000. Approximately 670,000 people live in the entire country, plus some 265,000 commuters from neighbouring countries every working
