More metro in Moscow: Two inaugurations

© Moscow Metro

In Moscow, two extensions to the metro network started operation in the first week of September.

On 5 September 2024, the existing Line 1 was extended by one station from Novomoskovskaya (formerly Kommunarka) over 1.9 km underground to Potapovo. In a few years, Novomoskovskaya will be connected to the new Line 16, the first section of which, Novatorskaya – Tyutchevskaya, was officially opened two days later, on 7 September 2024, along 7.2 km of new track. It connects to the ring line 11 in Novatorskaya (network map at: https://www.urbanrail.net/eu/ru/mos/moskva.htm) and serves three further stations. The Universitet Druzhby Narodov stop is considered to be particularly busy, with approximately 200,000 students, university employees and employees from other institutions in its vicinity.

Line 16 is to be extended at both ends by 2029, in the south to Novomoskovskaya and in the north to ZIL – around 100,000 passengers are then expected to use the line every day.
