Marseille is celebrating: yesterday, 7 January 2026, the first section of the long-awaited extension of the T3 tram line went into operation at both of its existing termini. In the north, the line now continues 1.7 kilometres from the previous terminus at Arenc, passing through three additional stops to Capitaine Gèze. Next Saturday, 10 January, there will be an official inauguration ceremony doe the extension to the south where the trams will run 4.4 kilometres further from the previous terminus at Castellane via eight new stops to La Gaye. At the Sainte-Margerite Dromel intermediate station, there will then be a transfer option to the M2 metro line, as is now also the case in Capitaine Gèze and already in Joliette and Castellane. The journey time on the 9.8 km extended T3 line from Gèze to La Gaye is 40 minutes. We have already reported on the expansion plans in Marseille HERE.

The new CAF low-floor tramcars will (also) be used on the T3: the Spanish manufacturer is supplying 15 of these seven-car, 42.5-metre-long Urbos 100X railcars to Marseille.

By 2030, 93,000 passengers are expected to use the extended T3 line on weekdays. The Marseille tram network currently consists of three lines with a total length of around 19 kilometres. Further route extensions beyond the new T3 termini are planned for the future, as well as a branch line from Place de Rome to Quatre Septembre.
