Ten new battery-electric double-deck vehicles entered service with National Express Coventry on the cross-city 9/9A routes on Sunday 30th August. The Enviro400EV buses are built in close cooperation by BYD ADL by using BYD electric technology and batteries with bodywork and passenger-centric interior by ADL. The Enviro400EV is already operated in a number of cities across the UK. It has a length of 10.9m, a width of 2.55m. The battery system used is a BYD lithium iron phosphate battery. Re-charge takes place via BYD dual plug 2×40kW AC charging.

Coventry is also the home to what National Express have deemed the last diesel powered bus that they will buy new, an ADL Enviro 400 MMC delivered early in 2020. The residents of Coventry have already experienced modern electric bus operation, Travel DeCourcey operated a number of battery powered Optare Versa single-deckers on the city’s dedicated park and ride service from late 2012 until it ceased with the diversion of regular Stagecoach longer distance services into the site. Travel DeCourcey themselves ceased trading in August 2020.
