In December 2023, Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe (DVB) proudly reported the commissioning of all 30 new NGT DX DD tramcars from Alstom that had already been ordered in 2019 – shortly before the end of the year, in order to avoid repayment of part of the previously approved funding. The first new trams had been officially presented to the public in October 2021: https://www.urban-transport-magazine.com/en/first-new-light-rail-vehicle-for-dresden-presented/.

9 units of the series are bidirectional vehicles and operate with the numbers 2981-2989, the single ended cars are categorised from no. 2901 onwards. Three more of these than originally ordered have already been delivered, as part of an agreed option for up to 10 more trams. The financing for the purchase of the remaining seven vehicles out of the option agreement has now also been secured, and the series will comprise a total of 40 light rail vehicles in 2025.

The new Alstom trams currently operate mostly on lines 2, 3 and on the special line 44 (Laubegast – Leuben cemetery – Seidnitz – Gruna – Hauptbahnhof Nord). The commissioning of the new vehicles also allowed several of the first Dresden low-floor trams of the 2501+ series, built by DWA Bautzen as type NGT6DD-ER in the 1990s, to be taken out of service.
