Following an extended period of market observation, Stadtwerke Augsburg (swa) decided to procure an initial two electric buses, which have been operating on a trial basis in regular service since January 2026. Since April, the two e-buses have been deployed on different duties and routes in order to gather operational experience. The programme also includes the integration of smart charging management software for intelligent vehicle scheduling.

The two trial vehicles consist of one single-deck and one articulated bus from the well-known eCitaro and eCitaro G models by Daimler Buses, which have been part of the swa fleet since November.

From 2028 onwards, 15 electric articulated buses are due to enter service in Augsburg. By 2039, all buses currently in operation, which have been fuelled by biogas since 2011, are to be completely replaced by electric buses. According to current estimates, swa expects the fleet to comprise 92 vehicles. Most recently, 14 MAN biogas buses entered service in 2025.

Within the Augsburg Transport and Tariff Association (AVV), individual electric buses have already been in operation with private operators for several years.
