Order confirmed: New trams for Valencia and Alicante

Known for some time already, Stadler Rail has now announced the receipt of an order for the construction of new trams for the Spanish operator Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana (FGV) – the regional railway service entity of the Valencia region.

The order is for 16 bi-directional Stadler TRAMLINK trams, which will be used on the two metre-gauge networks in Valencia and Alicante. In both places major network extensions are pending, and in Valencia there are also plans to replace at least some of the single-direction trams built in 1994 and 1999 – the first modern trams in the whole country.

FGV’s new seven-section 100% low-floor metre-gauge trams will be approximately 45 m long and 2.4 m-wide. They will be fully accessible and will have spacious multipurpose areas next to the doors, with places reserved for people with reduced mobility. They will provide greater capacity and fast and efficient passenger transit when boarding and alighting the vehicle.

Stadler was the only bidder and will deliver the vehicles from its Albuixech plant in 2025. Options have been agreed for a further 12 wagons. The value of the order for FGV’s new 4500 series is € 84.3 million.
