Stuttgart’s trams (SSB) are modernising their S-DT 8.10 and 8.11 series light rail vehicles, which are currently some 25 years old. These are 50 permanently coupled double light rail cars, numbered 3301/3302 – 3399/3400, which were originally supplied by Adtranz / Siemens / DUEWAG. They are now being refurbished by Siemens Mobility in Wegberg-Wildenrath near Mönchengladbach for a further service life of at least 15 years.
In order to initially gain experience with the work, which affects the interior as well as various mechanical and electrical components, only one double light rail car made the journey to the Mönchengladbach on road low-loader – this is train no. 3317/3318. The modernisation is due to be completed by 2027. SSB had already commissioned Voith to replace the traction converters in these vehicle series in 2020.
Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG will also receive 40 new light rail vehicles of the newly developed S-DT 8.16. type from Stadler, as we reported here:
These brand-new vehicles will bring further benefits for passengers, such as extended multi-purpose areas, improved accessibility and even better passenger information. The state of Baden-Württemberg is subsidising this purchase with around 84 million euros
