In his latest “Tram Atlas”, Robert Schwandl once again turns his attention to a European metropolis that boasts a particularly diverse local transport system: Budapest.
Following an introduction, the various modes of transport – S-Bahn, suburban rail, underground, rack railway, tram and trolleybus – are presented individually, each with a historical overview and a description of the current situation, including future expansion plans. Budapest has the oldest metro on the European continent, built in 1896 by Siemens & Halske; today there are four lines, each with a different technical configuration. The tram network is one of the largest in the world and still offers a great variety, particularly in terms of the types of vehicles used.
The description also covers the park railway, which plays an active role in the city’s local transport network, the funicular railway, and the fascinating Transport Museum in Szentendre.
As is customary with Robert Schwandl, the book includes a wealth of high-quality photographs and, of course, various high-quality maps and plans on different scales. Verdict: A must-read and must-see invitation to visit the Hungarian capital!
