Uruapan Cable Car: Mexico’s First System Beyond the Capital Enters Service

With the inauguration of the new urban cable car in Uruapan on 18 April 2026, Mexico has reached another milestone in the development of electrically powered, space-efficient transport systems. The project is the first installation of its kind outside the Greater Mexico City area and marks the entry of medium-sized cities into the systematic use of cable-propelled systems as part of public transport. In the western Mexican city of Uruapan, in the state of Michoacán, a mode of transport has been created that combines both functional and urban development objectives.

Technical Design and Infrastructure

The system has been implemented as a detachable monocable gondola with a route length of approximately 8.4 km and comprises six stations along a predominantly east–west alignment. It connects key urban facilities such as the IMSS hospital, the city centre, and major market and residential areas. Technically, it is a 10-MGD system supplied by Doppelmayr, equipped with CWA Omega V cabins. In total, around 90 to 94 cabins are deployed, each accommodating ten passengers. The transport capacity is approximately 1,500 passengers per hour per direction, placing the system clearly within the range of medium-capacity transport solutions. End-to-end journey time is around 29 minutes.

The cable car is based on the latest D-Line technology, characterised by detachable grips, automated station passage and continuous rope circulation. This enables a steady passenger flow without fixed headways, thereby minimising waiting times. The cabins are fully accessible, feature foldable seating and allow for the carriage of bicycles. Particular attention has been paid to a robust, vandal-resistant interior design, similar to that used in comparable systems in Mexico City.

Operations and Integration into Public Transport

Operationally, the system is fully integrated into the urban public transport network and complements the existing bus services. The fare has been set at MXN 10, deliberately aligned with conventional modes of transport to encourage widespread use. Daily ridership is projected at around 19,000 passengers, with long-term potential of up to 36 million passengers annually. The system operates entirely on electricity, with a significant share of energy reportedly sourced from renewables.

Operational safety is a key aspect. The installation has been certified by TÜV SÜD and is subject to regular inspections. Prior to commissioning, an extensive testing phase was conducted, initially with a reduced number of cabins, in order to validate all system components under real operating conditions.

Construction and Implementation

Construction took approximately two years, with up to 600 workers employed on site at peak periods. A notable technical feature was the use of drones to install the carrying rope, which proved particularly advantageous in areas with difficult access.

In parallel with the infrastructure works, the project was accompanied by extensive urban development measures. A total of 22 complementary interventions were implemented, including the upgrading of public spaces, the creation of new leisure and sports facilities, and traffic calming initiatives. This integrated approach underlines the ambition to use the cable car not only as a transport mode but also as a catalyst for urban regeneration.

Financing and Economic Impact

Total investment amounts to approximately MXN 3.0 to 3.2 billion, equivalent to around USD 164 to 183 million. This corresponds to unit costs of roughly USD 20 to 22 million per kilometre, placing the project at the lower end of the cost spectrum for urban cable car systems internationally. Financing was provided entirely from public funds by the state of Michoacán.

In addition to direct transport benefits, broader economic impacts are expected. These include increased commercial activity along the corridor and a projected rise in tourism. At the same time, the electrically powered system contributes to a reduction in local emissions, improving the overall environmental footprint.

Position within the Transport Landscape

The Uruapan cable car highlights the typical strengths of this technology: minimal land take, comparatively low construction costs and high adaptability to complex topographical conditions. At the same time, its limited capacity remains a constraint compared to high-capacity systems such as metro or bus rapid transit.

Nevertheless, the project demonstrates that cable-propelled systems can represent a viable and economically sustainable solution for cities with medium demand levels, particularly where conventional rail-based systems would be difficult or costly to implement.

Overall, the Uruapan cable car represents an important reference case for the further deployment of this technology in Latin America. The project illustrates that innovative and sustainable transport solutions can be successfully implemented beyond major metropolitan areas, provided that technical, operational and urban development aspects are consistently integrated.
