Zarautz is located on the north coast of the Iberian Peninsula and is one of the busiest seaside resorts in the Spanish Basque Country. A city bus service with a total of four routes has been in operation for many years to provide transport within the town and as a feeder service to the metre-gauge regional railway from Bilbao to San Sebastián operated by the Basque regional railway Euskotren.
The MAN midi-buses with bodies from the local body manufacturer Burillo from Logroño that have been used here up to now are now largely being replaced by electric buses – undoubtedly appropriate for a spa and bathing resort. The municipality proudly presented the first of the three new electric buses on the wide waterfront promenade: it is the ‘ie bus’ model from Basque manufacturer Irizar e-mobility, which is now widely used in the country and beyond.
Irizar recently announced the completion of the 1000th e-bus since the start of production at its purpose-built factory. We reported about the companies’ activities here in detail:

The total cost is EUR 2.09 million, including the charging infrastructure, of which EUR 934,000 was subsidised by the regional government.
Revenue service began in Zarautz on 7 October 2024.
