New Chairman of VRR’s Executive Board: Oliver Wittke

The former Transport Minister of the federal state of Nordrhein-Westfalen, Oliver Wittke, has been appointed by the Administrative Board as the new Chairman of the Executive Board of Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) from 1 February 2024 for a four-year term. Oliver Wittke replaces Gabriele Matz. José Luis Castrillo remains on the Executive Board team.

Oliver Wittke was most recently Chief Executive Officer of the German Property Federation (ZIA). Mr Wittke was born on 24 September 1966 in Marl. He is married and has two sons. After studying economics and geography, graduating with a degree in geography, Oliver Wittke was Lord Mayor of the city of Gelsenkirchen from 1999 to 2004. He focussed on the transport committees of the NRW state parliament and the Bundestag. From 2005 to 2009, he was Minister for Construction and Transport in North Rhine-Westphalia and a member of the North Rhine-Westphalia state parliament from 1995 to 1999, 2007 to 2010 and 2012 to 2013. From 2010 to 2012, he was Secretary General of the CDU state association of North Rhine-Westphalia. Mr Wittke was a member of the German Bundestag from 2013 to 2021 and Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy from 2018 to 2019. He was also a member of the Supervisory Board of DB for several years.
