On 21 April 2023, Düsseldorf’s public transport operator “Rheinbahn” presented the first of its ten new hydrogen buses of the type “H 2 CityGold” from the Portuguese manufacturer Caetano (numbered 6201 to 6210), no. 6202, in front of the castle tower on Burgplatz. The buses have fuel cells from Toyota, the expected range is 310 kilometres. Total passenger capacity is 64, thereof 30 seated.

From mid-May they are to be used in regular service on line 732 (Vennhauser Allee – Bremer Strasse).

It may seem surprising that Rheinbahn is now putting a second alternative propulsion technology into service alongside its ten battery-electric buses of the type “Irizar ieBus 12”. But the solution to the “riddle” is simple: Rheinbahn wants to find out for itself which alternative drive technology is best suited for its purposes by comparing it in very normal regular service.
